Sports day at Bangalore Steiner School

Each year in Bangalore Steiner School, we have an enthusiasm filled “Sports week”. It culminates at the end of the week with the “Sports day” - which is the finals for all the athletics/ outdoor events.

We gather under the open sky, surrounded by nature’s beauty and celebrate not only physical strength and skill but also the growth of the human spirit through movement and activity.  The human being is a harmonious balance of body, soul, and spirit. Sports are more than exercises and physical activities; they are opportunities to cultivate inner strength, resilience, and grace. They remind us of the rhythms of life—of striving, of overcoming, and of the joy that comes from working together.

Right from the beginning of the academic year, teams (houses) are formed and the children strategize, practice & look forward with excitement for this event. We began the academic year by discussing the Annual Sports Week/ Day during our Calendar of Events planning. Considering the rainy season in September. We planned for December 1st week as our sports week. The cyclone in Bay of Bengal still managed to play spoil sport initially. Our plans were turned upside down during Sports Week. We however managed finishing all the indoor tournaments and we waited patiently for a sunny day and managed to complete all the heats for all outdoor events within just two days.

On the final day of the “Sports Day” of the week, everything went smoothly as planned. The day began with the flag hoisting ceremony, followed by an impressive list of planned activities:

·         Flag Hoisting

·         Marching and introduction of teams

·         Singing of the Morning Verse and Games prayer

·         Oath ceremony

·         Warming up and Commencement of sports day

·         All planned sports events

·         Closing/ trophy hand over

The four teams competing were

1.       Vayu

2.       Agni

3.       Jala and

4.       Pruthvi.

After the opening ceremony we went on to the sequence of outdoor events.

1.       Running/ Sprints

2.       Hurdles

3.       Long jump

4.       Shot put

5.       Discuss throw

6.       Javelin &

7.       Team Relay (which is very enjoyable and looked forward by all)

The qualified students participated enthusiastically in the final round. What was truly remarkable was the display of sportsmanship spirit, where everyone encouraged and supported each other.

This was our third annual Sports Day celebration. The Jala house won the Championship Trophy for the third consecutive time, while the Prithvi house bagged the Discipline trophy. From year to year, our Sports Day has grown in enthusiasm and excitement. It is heartening to see the growth of our children's athletic skills, which is reflected in this year annual sports day.

There are tons of photos and videos capturing many moments of the week. A small sample below to represent the spirit of the event…
